Marcus Levison-Hays’ Electrobike Pi (2007) combines the lightweight portability of a bicycle with speed and self-propulsion more akin to a motorcycle. A breakthrough in environmentally sound transportation, Pi may be the ideal for commuting transport. Considered a “human-electric hybrid,” Pi charges from any standard household outlet in 2.5–3 hours and can run on a single charge for 25–30 miles. The hybrid feature means that Pi has three modes, switchable with a thumb throttle on the handlebar: The enthusiastic biker can operate on pure pedal power; a switch of the throttle moves Pi into electric/pedal mode; and – for those moments of utter exhaustion, perhaps the commute home from work – another change of the throttle moves Pi into a fully motorized mode. Pi comes fully loaded with a kickstand, rear carrying rack, two panniers (saddle bags for the back), two seats for the right fit and a voucher for a helmet (so you can choose the appropriate size). Seat placement is adjustable to suit humans of different sizes.
