4G data caps: not here yet, but likely to come

Sprint reiterated its short-term plan to not cap the data use on its 4G/WiMAX network, though that could change as more customers get on board and data use starts getting heavier. The company said during this week's MobileBeat conference that it saw consumer behavior change after it imposed monthly limits on its 3G network, and that's not what Sprint wants during the early days of its 4G network. Long-term, that may change.

Sprint VP of 4G Todd Rowley said that the 5GB per month data limit on its 3G network changed how its subscribers use the network (which was the point, right?). But when it comes to the 4G network, Sprint wants users to go crazy—at least for now—undoubtedly so they can experience all that the faster network has to offer. Rowley said that its 4G users currently download about 7GB per month, according to IDG, and that's fine with Sprint. If average data use skyrockets to something like 20GB per month, the company might then put a cap on 4G data usage.
